The 1950s often remind us of an uncomplicated age when people indulged in the simple pleasures of life like putting the kettle on and gathering around the old bakelite radio or the television for some wholesome entertainment.

Italian electronics powerhouse, Smeg was already in business then and wishes to remind us of the good old days with their Retro collections of appliances. But these are updated  with the latest technology.

Now Smeg’s upped the ante with the brand’s first ever collection of Variable Heat Kettles, which have turned putting on a cuppa into an art form.

There’s seven heat settings, ranging from 50˚C to 100˚C that increase in 10 degree increments. Simply choose the right heat for your favourite cup of tea, which might include 80˚C as the right temperature for oolong  tea while 90˚C is perfect for chamomile tea or instant coffee.

Other features include a Keep Warm Function, which allows you to keep the water in the kettle at the selected temperature for a maximum of 20 minutes. Genius.

The 50s Retro Kettle also has a stainless steel body with 360˚ swivel base with non-slip feet and cord storage, a soft open lid plus a lime scale filter. If such sophistication had been around in the 50s, Elvis Presley might have written a song about it.
